Are you a slimy salesman if you do SEO?

Posted on January 22nd, 2008 as Seo, Sites

Slimy salesmanAre you a SEO Expert? If you are that makes you a slimy car salesman according to Shoemoney.

Last week Shoemoney posted an article Why I do not like 95% of SEO Experts. He states “SEO’s are like the 21st century car salesmen. Most are slimy and have no clue what they are talking about.” Since his article has come out there have been numerous articles stating that is not true and that Shoemoney is wrong.

What is so funny about this situation is Shoemoney decided 2 days after his post is to hold a debate on his radio show Webmaster radio. I find it ironic how he takes a topic that is discussed a lot and bad mouths it to get peoples attention and then uses it to market his radio show which is subscription based service.

So Shoemoney who is the slimy salesman now? It sounds like Shoemoney is trying to sell us a subscription to his radio show so people can discuss the validity of SEO.

What are your thoughts on the comments made by Shoemoney?

Update: Shoemoney is offering the recording of the show for free to listen in case you missed the show here

That’s such a loaded debate. You’re either with us or against us, black or white…

The honest answer is that a lot of self-proclaimed SEO “experts” are doing a very middle-of-the-road job, I mean SEO ain’t rocket science is it? SEO takes common sense and a simple understanding of the environment and the techniques & tools, so although anybody can do it, it can be a slog of a job.

Then there’s some true aces… quiet ones who just do their SEO job day in day out and the loud ones who tell you how good they are.

And then you have the crap SEO people - some will never be any good, some admit that and then there’s the snake oil merchants… I am SO pissed off at the slimebags that check clients’ rank in the Search Engines and pretend that’s a “report” or who merely change the meta kws and descriptions and call that SEO.

Screwing people for money for nothing is bad but it’s all part of the clients’ learning curve and then decent SEO people show them the light and make a nice steady income.

Wow, all that and we didn’t listen to Shoemoney FM ;)

Lever thanks for the comments. You make some good points. I feel SEO is like a lot of markets, people found they could make money doing it and claim to be SEO experts when they are not. Thanks for your comments and I hope you like the site.
