How do you use social networks?

Posted on January 18th, 2008 as Technology

Web 2.0 City
I was in a restaurant the other night and ran into an old from high school. What was funny was my friend mentioned we should stay in contact and he gave me his MySpace address. Instead of giving me his number is was just easier to give me his MySpace address. It just made me pause and think how social networks have become part of daily life. I heard a forecast that was made at CES that 1.2 billion people will be using social networks by 2012 Read the rest of this entry »

Macworld 2008 - Steve brings us all of the new goodies.

CES and Macworld are probably the two most important events in the year for a technology junkie. Whether you attend the event or sit closely at your computer trying to get the latest news it’s our Christmas. Weeks before both events happen predications are made and everyone discusses possible things that might be release. I can’t reiterate enough how much fun these two events are unless you are one of these “junkies” for technology then these last sentences are irrelevant.

CES came to a close last week and this week we got the joys of Macworld 2008. Thankfully the wait is over and Steve Jobs presented the new toys at the keynote speak for MacWorld 2008. The big releases are:

  • Macbook Air
  • Time Capsule
  • iPhone / iPod Touch update
  • iTunes movie rentals
  • Apple TV update

So let’s dig into the features or updates of each new project.

Create a windows hidden share

Posted on January 10th, 2008 as Technology

I wanted to start a series of quick posts that offered easy tips and tricks with minimum fluff added to the article. So this is my first start in a continuing series of tips and tricks that are easy to do but you will wonder how you ever lived without them.

Have you ever wanted to create a network share on your network so only if you knew the specific address you could get to it but it could not be found on your network by a search? Well then I have an answer for you, it’s called a hidden share. By default windows creates hidden shares for administrative purposes for the operating system use. Creating a hidden share is a simple process once you know how to and thankfully you have me to teach you. The only thing that is required before we start is you have to already have a network setup. It can be as simple as two computers with a wireless router or 1000’s computers in a business.

There are a few short steps involved in creating a hidden network share:

  1. Find the folder that you would like to share.
  2. Next, right click on the folder and click on Sharing and Security…. This will bring up the properties for
the folder with the Sharing tab selected.
  3. In the Network sharing and security section, check off Share this folder on the network.
  4. In the Share name box, give the share any name you would like.
  5. Now, here is the crucial step that makes the share hidden. Add a $ at the end of the share name.
  6. Click OK to create the hidden share and close the properties window.

Now, if you try to browse to this computer from the network, you would not be able to see the share that you just created. So, how do you access it then?

If you go to Start?Run then type in \\computer name\share name$
an example would be \\pc1\music$

That’s it, your setup and good to go.
