Projects that never became or have yet to become

Unfinished Project

How many projects have you started that you never completed or realized it was not a great idea once you got started?

I was logged into today checking some settings on a domain I was transferring and I realized that I own 65 domains. I know to some people that it’s not a lot but 2 months ago I think I had 3. At first I was in shock and did not realize I had so many then I looked at my list and it started to make sense I just never kept an actual number of how many I owned. I know to become an internet entrepreneur it involves owning and managing sites but I did not think I would acquire so many so fast.

I have a minor addiction for buying domains. It is like when you hear about women and shoes for some reason I love having them, thankfully they take up less physical space then shoes though. Normally when I get some crazy idea in my head for some new site I browse over to GoDaddy and see if a domain is available; the problem for me is if I find the domain is available. If I can’t get a domain I like for the idea I let it go or write it down and might come back to it but if it is available I am all over it and want to buy it right then and there even though I might have not planned out my idea yet. The thing with GoDaddy though is if you buy 5 or more domains you get free private registration a feature that is normally a few dollars extra. Needless to say I normally try to figure out other domains I want or I try to keep a small list of domains I want and buy in bulk at the same time. As you can see domains add up very quickly for me because I very rarely end up buying just one.

Out of the domains I currently have I only use 7 domains and sometimes I use a spare domain as a test domain for any testing purposes so I don’t break a live site (I have learned that the hard way). I run this blog, 5 eBay auction sites, and a blog about weight loss. I had hopes to launch this blog and my weight loss blog together but shortly realized I needed to focus on one blog until I got the hang of things then worry about getting a second one running.

Most of my domains are parked by Go Daddy and not doing anything or I might have set the name servers on the domain to my hosting and then left it alone. I keep them in hopes I will get off my butt and work on them because I do have some decent ideas and a decent correspond domain name. Sometimes I buy a domain and started to work on it and realize it was not a good idea or realize that the niche is so overcrowded that the demand is too low.

One prime example of an idea I had that turned out being a bad idea was about the movie Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. I was really excited about the movie and thought it was going to be a big hit (it was done by the director of Talladega Nights which is one of my favorites). I went to Go Daddy and bought two domains that where semi related to the movie and I wanted to use them to make a site with some reviews and trailers with a few adense banners on the site. I thought I could get easy traffic and make a few bucks if I got the sites setup when the movie was released. Sadly though when I went to see the movie I really disliked it and it did not get good reviews so it killed any further ideas on that project.

After hearing about my scheme and my unfinished projects how many unfinished projects do you have?

You can never have too many domain names… as long as you have the ones you aren’t using parked.

Thanks for the twitter follow also :)

I had around 90 domains just sitting - cleared out 20 or so and then bought ten more. A lot of them are rubbish, don’t even know why I bought them (like ProperMics.com - jeez  )

@ Wingnut Thanks for the comments. Sadly I have not parked them. Any recommendations on a site for that? Thanks for the twitter follow too

@ The University Kid that makes me feel better I dont feel like I am the only one with a problem. I see a site in the works - domain buying addicts it will have a 12 step program.

Wow Bud! I’ve got 5 domains, and I thought that was a lot. You’re right about the private registration thing though. I use all of my domains, but it’s difficult to keep up sometimes.

I also have to resist buying new domains all the time..

@ Joe thanks for the comments. Yeah the private domains is normally my excuse but I try and always get private registration no matter what. Sounds like you need to get a few more why resist hehe.

Really you’re having good number of domains. Already you’ve invested enough money to grab those domains. Why don’t you invest few more bucks to host those domains…

Domains get adictive, just like shopping, making money or smoking… Once you see one you gotta colect them all! Really it is adictive.

I have actually lots of unfinished project, the primary reason is due to lack of time to implement it. If I will have that luxury of time, i have already jumped in, I have a day job that is why. Domaining is a good business, but you just need to be into the early stages.

@ Jack Its not hosting the domains that the issue. Its getting the project designed, updated, and maintenance. This blog is keeping me very tied up. Once I get the swing of things I will expand my projects.

@ Chris07 Sooo true. I actually picked up 6 more domains yesterday.

@ Mann3r 100% true, I have a full time day job and feel your pain. Working 40 hours a week then maintaining one site is a lot of work.

I’d continue buying domains if I were you. It’s an easy way to make some extra cash If you know what you’re doing.

This post reminds me of Shoemoney’s post - My Top Ten Wost Ways to make money online. Domaining can be profitable though, especially for big companies who buy in bulk.

I was just looking through the godaddy auctions yestarday, and I relized that there are plenty of great domain names out there yet to be registered, and are very easily remember able and whatnot, people just haven’t grabbed them yet.
