Information overload

Posted on January 8th, 2008 as Technology

Do you ever feel overwhelmed with all of the different ways you receive information? Right now I have around 15 email accounts, 50 rss feeds I read daily, 8 different accounts to social sites, and multiple accounts for im services. When is it too much?

Every day when I sign on to the computer in the morning it takes me 2 hours of reading just to get caught up before doing anything else. Probably 60-70% of that time is reading rss feeds then 20% email and the rest is spread out with all of the other sites. Then there are twitter, pwnce, im, facebook that eat up time throughout the day. I might take 5-15 minutes to reply to some instant messages or post a few replies on facebook but the catch is I might do that 5 times throughout the day. If you add that up 10 minutes times 5 times in a day that’s 50 minutes, almost an hour a day spent and that’s if I am only intermittently checking and don’t get into any major conversations.

Now don’t get me wrong I like all the ways that I receive information and love how easy it is to get news and communicate with my friends. My only question when is that we break the line of being productive and get to a point where we are struggling to keep up and face an information overload.
