Is getting Dugg important anymore?

Posted on January 22nd, 2008 as Sites, Technology

Do you as a blogger care about your posts getting Dugg anymore? Do you turn to Digg to discover new websites or find a new interesting article? Or have you started to go to other sites like StumbleUpon, MyBlogLog, or Reddit. The Digg effect is something that used to be something that was highly desired. Anymore unless you are one of the top 15 blogs in Technorati you cannot get on the front page of Digg without a miracle or lots of money.

When Digg first started it was a great idea. It was a website based on news submitted by the community not decided by a few people. When Digg was very popular if your article got to the front page most web servers could not handle the traffic. Web hosting companies would advertise that they could handle dig traffic. It was great idea and was a great tool to help bloggers get their articles noticed and get new readers. It was a great tool for people who were trying to find new articles and websites.

Digg started as a site based solely on technology news but as time went on they started expanded in to all news and I think since then has been on a decline since then. You lost all of the geeks who where posting and most of the front pages are now celebrity news or a funny video. Also now on the front pages of Digg you always find articles that all come from the same handful of websites every day. There is rarely any sites that make it to the front page without being a already a very well known site. If you are lucky enough to get high enough on Digg you get worthless traffic. You will have a spike in traffic for a few days then your traffic will go back to normal and maybe you picked up a few readers but I doubt it.

Some articles have started to pop up stating Digg is burying stories and banning people for reasons that don’t make sense. My personal favorite though is Digg blackmail. Another rumor that’s has really been popular is talks of a possible sell of Digg. Maybe they fear a decline and feel it’s time to bail before it’s too late.

So my question is do you still use Digg or hope to have an article Dugg?

I’ve been a long time digg user, and I have to say, that I have never subscribed to a blog after reading an article from one of them… I just digg it and move on.

I figure that if the blog owner writes any other good posts then the will end up on digg anyways… :p
