Planning your goals and stick to them

Posted on January 2nd, 2008 as Goals

As we enter 2008 I look back at my goals and what I accomplished for 2007 and realize I did not accomplish a lot of things I wanted to do. The more I think about why I did not accomplish them is I did not write then out and work on them consistently or just forget about them. It might have been a small goal like organize my desk or a bigger goal like put a thousand dollars in a savings account. It did make me realize the things I finished I wrote down and made sure to finish them because they where fresh in my mind.
If you ever read any books on becoming successful, losing weight, or restoring a car you always read that you need to write a plan before doing anything. Planning goals for the year is no different sit down and think of the things you want to accomplish or things you wish you would have done. Even if you carry a paper and pen for a week and jot them down until you build a list. Also when creating your list choose things that you accomplish in a year but do not go to the point where you can do it in 5 minutes. Some examples are creating the sixteenth chapel or taking out the trash (I know these are some extremes but you get my point).

Before reading any further make sure you have your goals written down. If you don’t stop now and do them now!

Okay now you have a list and you are looking at the screen going now what. Put this list in places you look daily; some places that I like are the refrigerator, dry erase board, desktop, or even a wiki. It’s up to you as long you see the list often enough that you don’t forget about your goals. Keeping them in your mind is what important.

The next step is to start working on your goals. The sooner you start the better chance you have of completing each goal. I am not saying you need to have every goal done by January 31st but don’t wait until December 15th to get started. Another important thing is to break them into smaller goals and work on the smaller pieces until you complete the big picture. If you goal is to organize your house start with one room then one area in that room. Set aside some time and start with the closet in the spare bedroom, once the closet is organized check of that small goal. The next day or the next week and organize under the bed or the furniture layout. Once you know it you have checked all of you smaller goals and completed the main goal of getting your house.

Good idea. I usually don’t write down my goals. I always thought it was silly when they made us do it in school. But I guess it does help motivate you!
